- - - - - - - - | Painter Caribe Heitor Julio Paride Bernabo sculpture Item # 4020 Click HERE to inquire about this item Caribe Heitor Julio Paride Bernabo 1911- 1998 BR Caribe' is a pseudonym of Hector Bernabo' Born Lanus, Argentine 1911. See "New Brazil Art by Pietro Maria Bardi Praeger Publishers c1970 page 152 "In his work he reproduces the folklore of Bahia which is his permanent theme. He executed a fresco for the American Airline Building at Idlewild Airport of New York in 1959" This wonderful piece is in original condition made from multiple pieces of scrap wood nail together and than hand carved to show the images of natives at dance and war. There is a small piece missing from the lower left which we show in one of the extra pictures we have supplied. The paint is blue and white with some flaking but most all the paint is fine. This piece was stored outside so it has some weathering effect to it. This antique African mask measures 21 and three quarter inches high by 8 and one half inches wide and 11 and one half inches deep. Including the stand the total height of this antique tribal mask is 25 inches high. Every year "Maiden masks" were carved for the "The Fame Of Maidens' annual festival in the north central region of Iboland. Here is a description from a Sothebys catalog. African and Oceanic Art New York Friday November 19,1999 lot 130 where a similar mask had been sold with an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000. "The ideal beauty of a girl has both physical and moral dimensions. Physically she "should" be tall and lithe,with an upright posture and stately carriage..Ideally she will have fine facial features, a thin straight nose and a small mouth and her hair will be elaborately and delicately dressed in the preferred crested style..These ideals link too with the beauty of nature and valued..medicines..Her moral qualities will include purity,obedience,good character and generosity (Cole and Aniakor 1982:121).
